Ramil

ramelRamil was hospitalized in a hurry, because he was vomiting blood. Medical examination learned he has open tuberculosis.

Ramil’s family is very poor. When they had to take him to a hospital in a hurry, they could only bring him to a public hospital. While the medical care in this hospital is cheap, the quality is lower too. Ramil was laying in a ward with several other tuberculosis patients. Unfortunately none of the doctors in this hospital are specialized in tuberculosis. Ramil’s family asked Sparrow for help, because they cannot afford the medical costs of a hospitalization even in this hospital.

Sparrow instantly contacted the only tuberculosis specialist in Calapan. After visiting Ramil she prescribed other medication and Ramil is taken to another hospital. In this hospital he is laying in an isolation room and the specialist has more opportunity to look after him. Furthermore this hospital is better equipped to examine the bleedings of Ramil.

The costs of the hospitalization and the long-term tuberculosis treatment are estimated at 750 euro’s.

Update 30-03-2010

We went to the clinic of the tuberculosis specialist with Ramil’s medical information.

Update 31-03-2010

We brought Ramil to the specialist with an ambulance. Unfortunately the specialist cannot visit patients in the public hospital. We decided to bring Ramil to another hospital.

Update 01-04-2010

Today another specialist examined the blood vomiting and the more recent nose bleedings.

Update 03-04-2010

Ramil is allowed to leave the hospital. The bleeding is under control and the tuberculosis will be treated at home with medication.

Update 12-04-2010

During a home visit Ramil appears to have yellow eyes and is very tired. We decided to bring Ramil to the specialist again, who performed some blood tests. The results of this tests are extreme and Ramil has to be hospitalized again as soon as possible.

Update 13-04-2010

An echo shows Ramil’s liver is damaged. Therefore the tuberculosis medication has to be stopped for a while.

Update 16-04-2010

Ramil is allowed to go home. He is feeling much stronger now, he can walk around on his own and is less tired too. He still has to wait with the tuberculosis medication.

Update 23-04-2010

Last week’s blood test was redone and the results are less extreme now. This led to the decision to resume the tuberculosis medication, but in a lower dose and for a longer period.

Update 26-04-2010

Today Ramil went to another doctor. Another blood test learned Ramil has hepatitis as well. He presumably has had a dormant form of hepatitis his whole life, but due to a lower resilience because of the tuberculosis it probably became active now. For this moment the doctor wants to observe the hepatitis. The blood test will be redone later on. Because of Ramil’s additional problems the costs of the treatment are estimated higher now, 75o euro’s instead of 500.

Update 08-05-2010

Ramil went to the doctor for a checkup and a new bloodtest. The results of the test are better than last time.

Update 15-06-2010

Today Ramil’s blood was tested again. The blood values were almost normal and the doctor was very positive during the checkup. Until Christmas Ramil has to take his medication and visit the doctor regularly for checkups.

Update 14-07-2010

Last month we did a lot of paperwork to file an application with the authorities for a compensation for the tuberculosis medication. Since Ramil does not get the usual medication because of his liver problem, this was not easy. The authorities rewarded our application and Ramil will receive his medication from the Philippine municipal health services. We are very happy with this result. Otherwise we would have had to raise the amount of money needed for Ramil’s treatment again. The costs of Ramil’s treatment are estimated at 750 euro’s. We hope we are able to raise this amount of money before Christmas. Will you help us?

Update 01-12-2010

The total amount of money needed for Ramil’s treatment is donated! Primary school De Reinbôge and the Reformed Church in Twijzelerheide have contributed for the larger part of the costs. They organized a sponsored run and a fancy fair for Sparrow. Thank you very much!
